EXCITING DAY TWO CONCLUSION TO POLISPORT ENDUROGP OF SPAIN IN OLIANA

Day two at the Polisport GP of Spain, round two of the Paulo Duarte FIM EnduroGP World Championship, marked an action-packed end to the weekend’s racing with Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Josep Garcia taking the win.

  • Double EnduroGP victory for Garcia in Spain
  • Rosie Rowett claims Expotrade Women’s Enduro win
  • Debut victory in Enduro3 for Albin Norrbin

Garcia claims double EnduroGP victory in Oliana

With an early start to the day, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Josep Garcia served a wake-up call to his rivals on the first GMOTO Enduro Test. Fastest by an astonishing 18 seconds, the Spaniard then backed things up by winning the following POLISPORT Extreme Test to lead by almost 20 seconds.

A return to the GMOTO Enduro Test to begin lap two saw Garcia’s lead extend to 30 seconds and, for the remainder of the day, the Spaniard was in total control of proceedings. Pushing as and when he needed to, he rode to victory by almost 40 seconds over his teammate, Andrea Verona.

Unable to give chase, Verona worked his way up to second place on lap one, holding a 1.54 second advantage over TM MOTO Boano Factory Enduro Team’s Zach Pichon at the end of the opening EXPOTRADE Cross Test as they headed into lap two.

The pair were soon joined by Sherco Racing Factory’s Steve Holcombe and NSA Racing’s Albin Norrbin, with both Norrbin and Holcombe finding good time on the GMOTO Enduro Test. Beginning lap three, Verona stretched his advantage to 16 seconds over Pichon, with Norrbin and Holcombe in close contention.

The final GMOTO Enduro Test proved telling, with Norrbin and Holcombe pushing Pichon back to fifth, with just three seconds separating them. Pichon then won the following POLISPORT Extreme Test to climb up into third. And with the TM MOTO rider setting the fastest time on the final EXPOTRADE Cross Test, he claimed third, finishing only eight seconds behind Verona.

In the fight between Norrbin and Holcombe, Norrbin took fourth by just two seconds, delivering arguably one of the best rides of his young career. In the end, Holcombe had to settle for fifth.

Debut Enduro3 win for Norrbin

Securing his debut Enduro3 class victory, Norrbin was full of celebration when he crossed the finish line of the final EXPOTRADE Cross Test. The Swede has now shown he’s ready to fight for wins this season, and will certainly be a continued contender at the GP of Finland. Holcombe came close to challenging Norrbin, but fell just two seconds short of denying him that maiden win. Battling injury, Brad Freeman (Beta) put in a heroic ride for third.

The Enduro2 class saw Verona take the win by eight seconds over Pichon. Day one winner Hamish Macdonald joined them on the podium in third.

A dominating performance by Garcia resulted in him winning the Enduro1 class by one-minute and 36 seconds. Triumph Italia Racing’s Morgan Lesiardo held off KR69 WET’s Axel Semb in the fight for second to take the runner-up result.

Rowett enjoys winning result in Expotrade Women’s Enduro

Day two of the Expotrade Women’s Enduro class marked another victory for RIEJU Factory Team, this time with Rosie Rowett taking the top step of the podium. The Brit showed today that she has recovered from her knee injury and is ready to fight for wins. Winning all but the opening GMOTO Enduro Test, she took the win by a very commanding 27 seconds.

ET James Sherco UK’s Nieve Holmes made it a British 1-2, finishing as the runner-up. Holmes was the rider to deny Rowett a clean sweep of special test wins. After a mixed start to her day, RIEJU Factory Team’s Rachel Gutish upped her pace during the closing stages of the race to finish just 1.43 seconds behind Holmes in third.

A stronger day two saw Italy’s Sara Traini (Triumph) hold off France’s Lorna Lafont (Husqvarna) to take fourth, with Lafont completing the top five. Traini also beat Lafont to win the Expotrade Junior Women’s Enduro category by 3.67 seconds.

Elgari takes the win in Tsubaki Junior Enduro

TM MOTO Boano Factory Enduro Team’s Alberto Elgari returned to the top step of the Tsubaki Junior Enduro category with a 14-second margin of victory on day two in Oliana. The Italian hit his stride early this morning, winning the opening GMOTO Enduro Test.

Repeating that again on his second timed run through the GMOTO Enduro Test, Elgari held a 21-second advantage over day one winner, Team KTM Pro Racing Sport’s Romain Dagna, who was playing catch up after a slow lap one. However, Elgari controlled the race from the front, matching any attacks by his French rival.

Topping the final POLISPORT Extreme Test, Dagna ended his day as runner-up, but will know he gave too much time away to Elgari on the GMOTO Enduro Test early on. Triumph Factory Racing’s Leo Joyon had a strong ride to finish on the podium in third. Helped by two wins on the EXPOTRADE Cross Test, the Frenchman was just six seconds behind Dagna at the finish.

Australia’s Will Dennett (Johansson MPE Triumph) rode well to take fourth, with France’s Diego Haution (Beta) completing the top five.

Cagnoni and Pasquato battle for Putoline Oil Youth class win

The Putoline Oil Youth Enduro class saw Fantic Factory Racing’s Riccardo Pasquato take his second victory of the season, increasing his overall lead in the championship. After placing as runner-up on day one, the Italian was feeling good from the outset of day two.

Trailing early leader Team KTM Pro Racing Sport’s Simone Cagnoni throughout the opening two laps, Pasquato managed to win the final two special tests of the day to win by six seconds. For Cagnoni, the young Italian almost had the victory in his grasp, only to fall short at the very end.

After winning day one, TM MOTO Costa Ligure’s Pietro Scardina was unable to repeat his performance on day two. Shadowing the leading two riders throughout the day, he ultimately had to settle for third.

WP Eric Ague’s Yago Dominguez signed off on his home Grand Prix with fourth, while Fantic Factory Racing’s Valentin Mersin completed the top five.

The Paulo Duarte FIM EnduroGP World Championship continues with round three in Vierumäki, Salpausselkä, Finland, from 22-24 May.

Josep Garcia (KTM): “It’s been a perfect weekend, winning both days in EnduroGP and Enduro1. Today, I felt like I had something extra in the Enduro Test over everyone else and was able to manage the rest of the lap because of that. I felt so good on the bike. Thank you to all the home support here in Oliana, cheering for me.”

Rosie Rowett (RIEJU): “It’s been a good weekend and so nice to be back winning. Yesterday I had a few too many crashes which cost me, but today I turned it around. I’m really happy with this.”

Alberto Elgari (TM MOTO): “For sure, it’s been a good and solid day. There were no mistakes today in my riding. My speed on the special tests was nice and to win today and keep the overall lead in the championship is fantastic. Thank you to my team and my family for the support.”

Riccardo Pasquato (Fantic): “Today was very good, with no crashes or mistakes. I was able to fight for the top three times all day, which made the difference. To take the win and continue leading the championship is perfect ahead of the GP of Finland.”
