HERLINGS & EVERTS ARE MASTERS OF ARNHEM AT THE MXGP OF THE NETHERLANDS !

HERLINGS & EVERTS ARE MASTERS OF ARNHEM AT THE MXGP OF THE NETHERLANDS!

ARNHEM (The Netherlands), 22nd August 2026 – With home success looking as likely as ever around the Motorsportpark Gelderland Midden venue for the Dutch supporters, the Saturday action at the MXGP of The Netherlands was held in front of a packed gallery of local fans, making round 16 of the 2026 FIM Motocross World Championships one of the busiest of the year !

After a few days of rain in the area, the track was blessed with dry weather for most of the day, and in terms of the results in MXGP, the crowd was blessed with exactly what most of them came for!

Jeffrey Herlings made it a clean unbeaten run of 12 straight victories in all races with a demolition job for Honda HRC Petronas, but fans were kept entertained by a rousing charge from Kay de Wolf, who picked himself up from a first corner crash to take second in the Qualifying Race for Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing. The MXGP rookie might be in the hunt tomorrow with a better start! Unlikely sand-fly Andrea Adamo celebrated his 23rd birthday in style with third place from a Holeshot for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing.

In MX2, Liam Everts took the first Qualifying Race win of the season for Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing, holding back a late charge from Triumph Racing Factory Team’s sand master Camden McLellan, whose teammate Guillem Farres slightly strengthened his Championship lead over Sacha Coenen with third place, after the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing ace crashed out of the lead at roughly half distance.

With an even bigger crowd set to get behind their heroes in MXGP, and with MX2 being as unpredictable as ever, we are set for a fantastic final day of European MXGP action at the Arnhem circuit tomorrow!

MXGP Start Arnhem 2026

Fans were excited to see early Championship leader Lucas Coenen return to action this weekend, and the Belgian impressed with fourth place in Free Practice behind the rampant Jeffrey Herlings, Kay de Wolf, and Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP’s Tim Gajser in third.

However, it all came to a premature end for the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider with a big crash in the Time Practice session, causing him to ride directly back to the Paddock, and there was to be no Lucas Coenen on the line for the Qualifying Race.  Herlings again topped the timings by six-tenths of a second, as Gajser split the two Dutchmen with a good late run, which De Wolf couldn’t match on his reply. Glenn Coldenhoff, on a wildcard return to GP racing for what he claims to be his last ever MXGP event, took fourth on his GCR Yamaha ahead of Andrea Adamo.

It was the Italian who fired into the lead around the first corner, while Herlings came out second ahead of the KTM Kosak Racing rider Roan van de Moosdijk, Coldenhoff, and the second Honda HRC Petronas machine of Ruben Fernandez!  All eyes were behind them though, as Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP’s Pauls Jonass slid to the floor in the first corner, and De Wolf was unable to avoid him! Clad in all-orange Dutch colours just like Herlings, he was easy to spot as he chased his way through the pack!

Herlings got around Adamo between turns one and two, while his nearest chaser in the series, Romain Febvre, was sixth for Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP, between Herlings’ Honda HRC Petronas teammates Fernandez and Tom Vialle.  Next came Red Bull Ducati Factory MXGP Team pilot Andrea Bonacorsi, a slow-starting Gajser, and the Dirt Store Triumph of Ben Watson.

The third lap saw the first major moves in the top ten, as Febvre passed Fernandez over the finish line jump for fifth, and Gajser squeezed past Vialle for seventh. Van de Moosdijk made way for Coldenhoff on lap five, which started a plummet down the order for Roan. De Wolf had passed a dozen riders to reach 18th by the end of the first full lap, and eventually reached the top ten, at the expense of Van de Moosdijk, by lap six!

Herlings relentlessly pulled away from a still-strong Adamo, while Febvre and Gajser swapped places as the Slovenian made great progress to rise to fourth.  De Wolf had the crowd baying for him as he passed Watson, Bonacorsi, and both of Herlings’ teammates to reach sixth by lap eight! He wasn’t done there either, as he won a drag race with Febvre for fifth on the following lap, then carved around Gajser for fourth, and then dived to the inside of Coldenhoff for third on successive laps! A slight mistake on the entrance to the first set of waves cost him a little time, but he was on Adamo’s back wheel by the end of lap 13, and the Italian overshot his braking into a downhill corner to give the Dutchman an easy pass for second!  It was the culmination of an incredible charge!

Watson got the better of Bonacorsi to claim ninth with four laps to go, and Gajser crashed a lap later, in the corner before the finish line, to drop to eighth at the finish.  Fernandez and Vialle put their factory Hondas into sixth and seventh, and Febvre was unable to pass the even more experienced Coldenhoff for fourth!  Adamo’s third place, his fifth such finish of the year in Qualifying, was a fine birthday present that puts him back ahead of Fernandez for fifth in the Championship. Herlings’ win by nearly 39 seconds was enough to leave no-one else with thoughts of victory tomorrow, apart from maybe De Wolf, who must feel that a good start will give him at least a chance of ending the unbeaten run of “The Bullet” around the Arnhem sands!  Jeffrey’s lead is now up to 120 points, and the following round will be made all the easier with every point gained tomorrow, when he will have the crowd one thousand percent behind him!

Jeffrey Herlings: “It’s never easy. I got a good start again and I was leading from the second turn, and that really helped. I could just do my own pace, do my own race, and that helped me out, so that felt good. The weather was awesome, and that was really good for the riders and the bikes. Super pumped with the bike, super pumped with my day, fastest in every session and I took a good start. Hopefully we do the same thing tomorrow.”

Kay de Wolf: “I basically came from second last all the way to second, so I really enjoyed the full race. I had enough to do, enough work on my list, and it all happened. Jeffrey was gone by the time I even reached turn five, he was already leading, so I thought we’d never catch him anymore. But it was a really fun race, I enjoyed it and I’m looking forward to tomorrow. Hopefully with fewer passes to make.”

Andrea Adamo: “I’ll take that one, for sure. I’m really happy, I took the holeshot and then I ran wide in the second corner and Jeffrey passed me. I tried to follow for a lap and a half, but I got big arm pump so I had to slow down, breathe and find my rhythm, because Jeffrey was gone, I couldn’t see him anymore. Let’s say I was leading the group of three, four, five, six, seven, so I had to work, but I’m really happy with P3 and confident for tomorrow.”

Liam Everts

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 rider Janis Reisulis, last year’s EMX250 winner here, claimed top spot in both Free and Time Practice sessions, with Camden McLellan taking the second gate pick a third of a second behind. Sacha Coenen was next best ahead of his fellow Red Bull KTM Factory Racing pilot Simon Längenfelder, with Liam Everts fifth.

Sacha pulled his trademark Holeshot move to burst into the early lead in the Qualifying Race, with the Honda HRC Petronas of Valerio Lata briefly second before Everts railed around him in turn two! Guillem Farres and Janis Reisulis soon followed him past, the Latvian also railing around the Spaniard in a right-hand hairpin! McLellan was also past Lata for fifth by the end of the first lap, while home hero Kay Karssemakers was seventh for DRT Kawasaki ahead of the second Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 machine of Karlis Reisulis. Längenfelder was ninth ahead of the Ošicka KTM of Julius Mikula.

Kay and Karlis passed Lata on the following lap, but on lap six the Dutchman would exit the race with a technical issue, and Lata would fight back past the elder Reisulis to finish seventh ahead of the Latvian.  Mikula held on to ninth, while Scott Smulders took his first Saturday points of the season in tenth for SixtySeven Racing Husqvarna, to match his career best Qualifying Race result from the 2024 MXGP of Flanders!

Up front, Sacha Coenen tried to build a lead, but had a few ragged moments that kept costing him time, as Farres and McLellan both got past a wayward Janis Reisulis to move into third and fourth behind Everts on lap three.  Längenfelder rose to sixth, where he would finish all on his own, from lap four.  On lap eighth, Coenen finally made one mistake too many and hit the ground through the corner after Pit Lane, forcing Everts to use all of his incredible balance as he avoided the fallen KTM!

Coenen got back up in fifth behind Janis, but passed the Latvian by outjumping him at the furthest point of the track from the start line with three laps to go to claim fourth at the flag. Farres had held on ahead of McLellan for several laps, but with three laps remaining the Spaniard made his own mistake through the biggest wave section, saving what could have been a massive crash, and stayed safe for third place, gaining another point on Sacha, who nearly caught him on the final lap, to make the gap 25 points heading into tomorrow.

McLellan forced his way towards Everts, but was unable to get close enough to make a move for the lead.  The Belgian celebrated his first Qualifying Race win since April 2025, when he won at Trentino, and moves to within 40 points of Längenfelder’s fourth place in the table.

It’s tough to call this class for tomorrow’s races, but any of the top six today could be in with a chance!  Find out tomorrow when the atmosphere will be ramped up to eleven at the MXGP of The Netherlands!

Liam Everts: “Finally, better late than never, so it’s a good one and this one really feels good. Sacha just made a little mistake there, we were pushing a good pace, and then Camden came at me and pushed all the way to the end, but I’m feeling really good. Finally getting that mojo again and I’m excited for tomorrow.”
